The Internet is simply an 'interconnected network'. Really, it is the postal service made electric. And like the postal service, it carries letters (email), and unsolicited junk mail.

Well, everyone who is on the Internet to do business wants to send you advertising material. They collect your email address by automated 'bot', from address sellers, from wherever they can be found.

Many commercial sites collect as much data as they can from visitors via 'cookies' and registration proceedures. They are trying for the usual buyer profile so they can tailor ads and identify 'hot prospects'. This is business as usual, and it is standard proceedure in the real world, so it should be expected in the cyber world. In one sense, that is fair, it is just business.

UHIS doesn't collect user profile information. I don't know how to collect visitor information, I wouldn't if I knew how, I don't want to know how, I don't care about the 'profile' of who visits this site, I regard it as none of our business.

I DO NOT, AND WILL NEVER, SELL, TRADE, GIVE AWAY, OR REVEAL ANY DETAILS OF E-MAIL ADDRESS OR OTHER PERSONAL OR BUSINESS DETAILS. THAT'S MY POLICY, MY PROMISE.

UHIS NEVER EVER SENDS PROMOTIONAL E-MAILS ON BEHALF OF OUR ADVERTISERS OR ANY OTHERS.

NO FINANCIAL OR PERSONAL DETAILS ARE HELD ON THE INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS SERVER. Email is taken off the server regularly, and all details are held on a local computer which is only connected to the server for the few minutes it takes to remove the days email or to upload a new file.

JOURNALISM-I PROTECT MY SOURCES-I regard all information given to me as privileged and private. Sources are never revealed to third parties-unless the source has already 'gone public' and ALL the information revealed to me is now 'in the public domain'.

RIGHT TO BE IDENTIFIED AS THE CREATIVE SOURCE- There is some fantastic creative work done by many people which is never recognised, as it is locked away in scientific journals or copies of conference proceedings. And important data and insights may be acquired which are not relevant to the rigid constrains of peer reviewed publication. This fusion of experience, interpretation as a human, and hard data is a treasure not usually recorded anywhere, as there is no forum. I attribute and acknowledge creative work where the author is comfortable with that. I would be pleased to record some of the musings of science workers in relevant subject areas, using terms such as '..believes' '...wonders', '..is concerned that' and so on, either attributed or unattributed.

RIGHT NOT TO BE EXPOSED  TO LIABLITY FOR DEFAMATION-I unashamedly delete, re-word (with the authors permission), or refuse to publish, anything that is (or might be) defamatory. Unlike American law, where the right to freedom of speech is guaranteed under the Constitution, in my opinion British, Australian and New Zealand defamation laws are repressive, in the sense that the only real defense in a defamation trial is that what was said was true, and that the standard of proof  has to be as high as that for convicting someone of murder.

In other words, the words used have to be proven by the defense to be totally true, not mostly true, and have to be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. If that standard had to be applied to every sentence ever published about anything, virtally all publication would stop. This website is about debate and opinion, which cannot be defamatory, because debate and opinion are not assertions of fact. But where there are 'grey areas' where assertions are made about people or corporate bodies without the backup of  publicly available proven sources, we err on the side of caution and edit heavily, or refuse to publish. Until the laws can be changed to allow freedom of speech tempered with REASONABLE statutory responsibility to fair dealing, that is just the way I have to operate.
